Huehuetenango is the highest non-volcanic region in Guatemala and one of the country’s best for coffee production. The local Cuchumatanes mountains are the highest non-volcanic massif in Central America, making this one of the few coffee regions where the trees grow on non-volcanic soil.

It’s important to note that this region borders Mexico, so the dry, warm winds from the Mexican plains protect the area from frost, allowing coffee to thrive at high altitudes.

Since Huehuetenango is a remote and hard-to-reach region, there are almost no centralized processing stations. Farmers process the coffee themselves, and the rivers allow processing stations to be placed anywhere. The beans are sun-dried and then sold.
